Getting Here

It was still dark when I got up at 4am Saturday morning to make my way to the airport. My flight was on time and I was really excited to find out that I got to board my plane by walking out on the runway and walking up a set of stairs onto the plane!

Jetstar flight JQ560 What a beautiful view as we flew out of Victoria!

When I arrived at Brisbane Airport I met up with some of the other teachers in my group and we caught a taxi to the ferry terminal. Our ferry trip to North Stradbroke Island took 25 minutues, it was a really fast boat! We arrived on the island and walked 1km to Moreton Bay Research Station. It is an amazing scientific research hub with full laboratories and even aquarium tanks to study marine life. We met Kevin, who runs the research station, and he told us the rules of staying at the station. We then walked over the road to our accomodation which is a lovely house only 30m from the beach.

We had a visit from a local aboriginal elder from the Quandamooka people who welcomed us to country and talked to us about the rich history of North Stradbroke Island. The island was one of the first places to be settled when the Europeans arrived. It might be interesting to do some research into this as part of your Investigations this term. On Sunday we are planning to get up early and head straight out on the boat - our mission is to survey the seagrass in Moreton Bay to ensure that the marine mammals that live there are in a healthy ecosystem. Hopefully I will have some great photos to put up when I get back.
