A nice day on Velella

So today was a nice contrast from the previous two days. This morning I woke up and my whole body was stiff and aching after around 20 hours spent diving, sampling and snorkelling.

Today I spent the day working on the big boat Velella. On this boat we deployed a little underwater camera on a specially made sled to record the sediment, condition, and species composition of the ocean floor. All this data is also tied back into the habitat mapping.

Although we still did quite a few sites, it was nice to be dry and out of the sun for most of the day.

We saw a few dolphins and another big turtle but with the wild weather coming in this arvo we didn’t see a lot of marine life.

Highlight of the day was learning how to sail the boat back to port.

With a thunderstorm rolling in this arvo and more winds predicted for tomorrow, things could get a little dicey out on the boats.

Have a great Friday!
