INTRODUCTION

John Monash Science School (JMSS) is Victoria’s first specialist science school, located on Monash University’s Clayton campus in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. JMSS focuses on science, mathematics and associated technologies. It is the result of a unique partnership between the Victorian Government and Monash University, and is located in a purpose-built facility on the university's Clayton Campus. The school accommodates 640 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 (VCE). Students, who are interested in science and mathematics come to JMSS from all over the state of Victoria, with several rural students accessing homestay accommodation. 

CURRICULUM

In order to achieve its aims, JMSS has formed strong partnerships with researchers and academics in a broad mix of scientific fields at Monash University, sharing resources and expertise and ensuring the courses offered at JMSS are rich, challenging, contemporary and relevant. Co-constructed with Monash academics, the curriculum at JMSS allows students to explore the cutting edge of scientific knowledge and understanding in the areas of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, mathematics, engineering, biomedical science, geography and computer science, among others. Throughout Years 10 to 12 the school has implemented the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the new Australian Curriculum. Most VCE studies are offered. Some students accelerate above their age’s academic level, and many students access university enhancement subjects on the Monash campus alongside traditional Year 12 subjects. At Year 10, students study emerging science electives in fields such as nanotechnology, astrophysics, pharmaceutical science and bioinformatics. Through our partnership with Monash University, all Year 10 students are able to undertake an extended science research project, and work experience with guidance from expert mentors. Every student has access to a range of co-curricular options, including languages, music, the arts, community service, leadership and sport. JMSS believes in a holistic education for all students, and the strong focus on personal wellbeing and empowerment, physical activity and leadership development is a feature of life for students at the school.

STUDENT WELLBEING AND EMPOWERMENT

There is a strong support system at JMSS which underpins all learning. The school is noted for its house system, with all students allocated to one of four houses for their entire time at JMSS. Each student has their own mentor teacher who will also remain with them during this time. Mentors are responsible for overseeing each student’s day-to-day progress and wellbeing. The school runs many house events and other programs designed to build confidence, resilience, connectedness and spirit within the community.

FACILITIES

The physical environment at JMSS is very different from traditional schools. Flexible learning spaces enable students to learn individually and in teams. All students develop individual learning portfolios informed by their own interests and abilities. Students use tablets or laptops and iPads to research, problem-solve, organise, document, analyse, present and create digital objects as well as access references and resources from Monash University and beyond.  

LOCATION

Monash University has provided the site for the school building — in the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP) at the Clayton campus.

OUTREACH

The school’s growing outreach program includes work with students and teachers from remote locations in regional Victoria and outer-metropolitan Melbourne as well as local primary schools with our "Little Scientist - Big Science" program. JMSS is excited about opportunities available for teaching our contemporary curriculum around Victoria, creating Emerging Sciences Victoria. Community members are welcomed to join students, teachers, parents and Monash academics for our annual Science Fair in late October. JMSS is hosting 32 schools from around the globe for the International Student Science Fair (ISSF 2015) in December 2015.
